US Scrambles After Underestimating Iranian Drone Threat
CNN reports the US underestimated Iranian drones, forcing urgent action as military accelerates defenses amid funding delays and rising concerns.
The US military and political leadership underestimated the damage Iranian drones are capable of inflicting, CNN reports, citing sources within the American government.
According to the network’s interlocutors, Washington was not prepared for the scale of the drone threat. Officials acknowledge that the US failed to fully assess the potential of such attacks, despite the experience of the Ukrainian conflict, where unmanned systems have become a central element of warfare.
Sources say the US military is now scrambling to catch up. Efforts are being accelerated across the board, including procurement, research, and the deployment of technologies designed to counter drones.
At the same time, one of the key obstacles, as noted by officials, is Congress, which has not provided funding quickly enough, complicating the response to the emerging threat.
CNN had previously reported difficulties in countering Iranian-made Shahed drones. The seriousness of the threat has been publicly acknowledged by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Kane.
