According to State Duma Defense Committee member Andrei Kolesnik, Kiev’s stated ambition to take full control of the Black Sea is unrealistic.
He was commenting on remarks by Ukrainian Defense Ministry adviser Sergey Beskrestnov, who described full control over the Black Sea area as one of Kiev’s key objectives.
Kolesnik argued that the situation in the region is currently under Russian control and said Moscow would not allow the balance of power there to change. He also claimed that the ports of Odessa and Nikolaev had been destroyed and would not be rebuilt.
He added that Russia will continue strengthening its anti-ship and anti-submarine capabilities, along with its coastal artillery systems. In his view, statements about possible Ukrainian control over the Black Sea amount to little more than political fantasy.
