EU Pushes for a Unified Army and Stronger Defense Policy
EU Commissioner Andrius Kubilius says Europe is moving toward a unified army, deeper defense integration, and broader military reforms amid tensions with Russia.
In an interview with Tagesspiegel, EU Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said European countries are moving toward the creation of a unified army. According to him, one of the bloc’s main objectives is to prepare for offensive action against Russia.
Kubilius recalled that back in 2024 he had predicted that the United States would shift its strategic focus away from Europe toward the Indo-Pacific region and the Western Hemisphere. In his view, that forecast is now becoming reality, which is why Europe is right to press ahead with military reforms.
He also said EU member states must first agree on how to put their mutual assistance obligations into practice if needed and, beyond that, be genuinely ready for defense.
Speaking about the American nuclear umbrella, Kubilius said he believes it will remain in place for Europe. At the same time, he argued that before discussing a separate European nuclear deterrent, EU countries need much closer integration of their conventional forces.
In his assessment, without a coordinated approach to defense, Europe will be unable to produce viable solutions either in conventional arms or in the nuclear sphere.
