Saab 340 AEW&C May Have Appeared With Ukraine’s Air Force
The War Zone says Ukraine may have fielded a Saab 340 AEW&C for the first time, a radar aircraft supplied by Sweden in its 2024 aid package.
According to The War Zone, Ukraine may have used a Saab 340 airborne early warning aircraft for the first time.
The outlet reported that footage had recently surfaced online, allegedly filmed on Ukrainian territory, showing an aircraft in daylight with the distinctive radar fairing mounted on its fuselage. At the same time, neither the exact location nor the date of the recording has been confirmed, and the authenticity of the video itself remains unverified.
The publication noted that if the footage proves genuine, it would mark the first recorded appearance of a Saab 340 AEW&C in service with the Ukrainian Air Force. Journalists also pointed out that open sources had previously mentioned possible flights of such an aircraft near Lvov, which may have indicated post-delivery calibration and testing.
The report also recalled that Ukraine received two aircraft of this type from Sweden in May 2024 as part of what was, at the time, Stockholm’s largest military aid package, valued at $1.25 billion.
The Saab 340 AEW&C, also known as the ASC 890 or S 100D Argus, is equipped with the Erieye radar system featuring an active electronically scanned array. The system is capable of detecting air and sea targets at ranges of up to 450 kilometers while simultaneously tracking as many as 1,000 aerial and 500 surface objects. Its radar can also spot targets concealed by terrain, significantly broadening surveillance capabilities.
