US Unveils F-22 Stealth Tanks and AGM-181A Missile
US shows new F-22 stealth fuel tanks, infrared sensor pods and AGM-181A nuclear cruise missile during test flights over the Mojave Desert.
The United States has for the first time unveiled new external fuel tanks and infrared sensor pods for the F-22 fighter, as well as the latest AGM-181A nuclear cruise missile.
Test flights were conducted over the Mojave Desert, involving F-22 aircraft equipped with the new tanks and sensor pods, as well as a B-52H bomber carrying AGM-181A LRSO cruise missiles. Photos of the tests were published by aviation photographer Jarod Hamilton.
The F-22 upgrades are part of the «Raptor 2.0» program. The aircraft received so-called stealth fuel tanks with reduced drag, which, according to Lockheed Martin, can remain attached even in combat, preserving maneuverability and low observability. The new infrared sensor pods are designed to improve detection of targets, including stealth objects, which is considered particularly relevant for the Indo-Pacific region. Integration of these systems is ongoing, and timelines for deployment have not been disclosed.
At the same time, the B-52H was spotted for the first time carrying two prototype AGM-181A LRSO missiles, which are intended to replace the aging AGM-86B. The new cruise missile is equipped with the upgraded W80-4 thermonuclear warhead, offering improved safety and reliability. Serial production is expected to begin in 2027, with deployment planned for 2030. The missile will be carried by the B-52H and the future B-21 Raider bomber.
The tests are taking place amid accelerated deployment of new US Air Force aviation programs, including the B-21, the sixth-generation F-47 fighter, and CCA drones, which are expected to enter service within the next 15–20 years.
