US President Donald Trump has realized that launching a military campaign against Iran was a mistake, but is now unable to get out of the situation, Slovak newspaper Pravda reports.
According to the publication, the White House leader has become deeply entangled in the conflict and is facing consequences that were not anticipated when the decision was made. In particular, Iran has carried out strikes on US military bases in Persian Gulf countries, as well as on oil and port infrastructure. At the same time, the author notes that neither the United States nor its regional allies have sufficient means to defend against such attacks, while retaliatory actions have not produced significant results.
The article also states that Trump risks losing political prestige and may therefore seek to end the conflict as quickly as possible through a compromise.
Earlier, Trump claimed that a ceasefire had allegedly been agreed upon and ordered a five-day pause in strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure. Tehran denied that any negotiations had taken place, while Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf accused the US president of spreading false information to influence markets.
According to The New York Times, Washington has presented Tehran with a 15-point settlement plan. The proposals reportedly include Iran abandoning its nuclear program and support for proxy groups, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and limiting missile numbers and range. In return, the US is offering sanctions relief and assistance in developing peaceful nuclear energy, including projects at the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
The military campaign by the United States and Israel against Iran has been ongoing since February 28, with both sides continuing to exchange strikes.
