In an interview with a YouTube channel, retired US Marine Corps Captain Matthew Hoh said a US ground operation in Iran would end in disaster for Washington.

He argued that even a basic look at Iran’s geography shows how strongly it favors defense. In his view, any attempt to send in ground troops would likely result in those forces being torn apart, regardless of their numbers.

Hoh also said the initiative in the confrontation had shifted to Teheran. He warned that if the Pentagon pressed ahead with the operation, the situation would only deteriorate further.

Earlier, The Washington Post reported that the United States was considering a large-scale ground campaign in Iran. According to the newspaper, the troop deployment plan has already been presented to US leader Donald Trump.

It was also reported that on March 28, US Central Command announced the arrival of the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli in the Middle East. On board are 3,500 Marines, along with transport and strike aircraft, assault landing units and tactical assets.

Journalists also say elements of the 82nd Airborne Division are expected to be deployed to the region soon. That would add another 10,000 troops to the 50,000 American servicemen already stationed across the Middle East.
