Bloomberg columnist Andreas Kluth argues that the first shots of a third world war would be fired in space.

He said there was broad agreement that the opening stage of the next global conflict would likely unfold in orbit, alongside a simultaneous exchange of attacks in cyberspace, which is becoming increasingly intertwined with space operations.

According to Kluth, major military powers such as the United States, China and Russia already use orbit not only for разведка-sorry can’t mix languages-use orbit not only for intelligence gathering, but also for mapping, tracking adversaries and directing troops. For that reason, in the event of a large-scale war, one of the first priorities would be to disable enemy satellites and ground infrastructure.

In his view, the initial phase of such a conflict could involve electromagnetic pulses. Later, the fighting could escalate to lasers and missiles launched both from Earth and from orbit. Kluth also did not rule out the use of nuclear weapons in space.

He warned that if such a scenario were to unfold, the first satellites destroyed would be those caught in direct line of sight. After that, a radiation zone would emerge and begin damaging other spacecraft as they passed through the affected orbit. Kluth believes such a move would almost certainly trigger retaliation and could bring catastrophic consequences for civilization as a whole.
