Ukraine’s ambassador to NATO, Alena Hetmanchuk, said that a possible US withdrawal from the alliance could lead not to its collapse, but to its transformation and even open new opportunities for Kiev, Politico reports.

In her assessment, the current instability within the bloc could become a trigger for its rethinking and renewal. She argues that the situation points not to NATO’s weakening, but to its potential restructuring.

Hetmanchuk also stated that, despite tensions and pressure from Washington, the current circumstances could expand Ukraine’s prospects for integration into the alliance. In her view, this could make NATO more effective in confronting Russia.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said he is considering withdrawing the United States from NATO after the alliance refused to support the operation against Iran. He criticized the bloc, calling it ineffective and questioning its ability to protect US interests.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also noted that the United States cannot fully use allied bases to defend its interests, describing NATO as a «one-way street.»
