India Expands S-400 Purchases in Major Defense Upgrade
India approves a $25B defense package including more Russian S-400 systems and new transport aircraft to strengthen air defense capabilities.
India has approved a major $25 billion military modernization package that includes the purchase of five additional S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, Defense News reports.
According to the publication, the decision was made by the country’s Defence Acquisition Council led by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. The new systems will complement the S-400 units ordered in 2018: three are already deployed along India’s northern and western borders, while two more are expected to be delivered this year.
The report notes that the expansion of S-400 procurement reflects India’s efforts to strengthen its air defense amid threats from China, Pakistan, and Myanmar. The systems have previously demonstrated effectiveness in intercepting aerial threats, including missiles.
India has also approved the acquisition of 60 new multi-role transport aircraft. Potential suppliers include Brazil’s Embraer, the US-based Lockheed Martin, and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation.
Defense News adds that Russia remains a key supplier of military equipment to India. This is attributed to the relatively lower cost, durability of Russian systems, their ability to operate in diverse conditions, and the Indian military’s familiarity with such equipment.
