Russia Rolls Out Spirit-030 Satellite Terminals in Combat Zone
Russian forces are deploying Spirit-030 satellite terminals as a Starlink alternative. Compact systems enable secure communication and battlefield coordination.
Russian forces have begun turning to alternative satellite communication systems in the combat zone after losing access to Starlink, according to Sergey Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine’s defense minister known by the call sign «Flash».
Citing Ukrainian intelligence data, he said Russian troops are now receiving large quantities of compact Spirit-030 terminals. These systems had been used before, but earlier versions were bulkier, making them easier to detect and destroy.
The updated devices are significantly smaller. Beskrestnov noted that the antenna diameter has been reduced from roughly 90 centimeters to about 30, while still maintaining stable operation via geostationary satellites. He indicated that these portable terminals are now being supplied to the front line on a wide scale.
Spirit-030 systems were first reported in summer 2025, when they were delivered to Russian units in limited numbers. At the time, they were described as mobile and low-visibility platforms capable of providing full satellite communication.
The Spirit-030 is a domestically developed Russian solution designed for field use. Functionally, it serves as an alternative to Starlink, adapted to Russian technology.
Data transmission runs through geostationary satellites, with both voice and digital communication protected by encryption, increasing resistance to interception and jamming. The terminals can be used to coordinate units, direct artillery fire, and transmit reconnaissance data.
