Strikes on Khark Island Highlight Tensions Around Iran’s Oil Hub
US and Israeli strikes hit Khark Island, a key Iranian oil export hub, as tensions rise over the Strait of Hormuz and looming US ultimatum to Tehran.
The United States and Israel have carried out strikes on Khark Island, a critical hub for Iran’s oil exports, according to a report by the Iranian news agency Mehr.
The agency said several explosions were recorded on the island, though details about the specific targets remain undisclosed.
Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 indicates that on the morning of April 7, a U. S. MQ-4 °C Triton electronic reconnaissance drone spent an extended period over the Persian Gulf. The aircraft was operating at an altitude of roughly 4.5 kilometers, flying near Khark Island and the port of Bushehr.
The developments come against the backdrop of a looming deadline tied to an ultimatum issued by U. S. President Donald Trump to Tehran. The deadline, set to expire on the night of April 8 (evening of April 7 in the United States), includes a demand to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Washington warned that failure to comply could trigger large-scale strikes targeting energy infrastructure and bridges.
Khark Island plays a central role in Iran’s energy system, handling up to 90 percent of the country’s oil exports.
In recent days, Tehran has warned that any attempt to seize the island would provoke a harsh and unprecedented response.
