Strike on Lavan Oil Refinery Raises Questions Over Iran Ceasefire
Attack on Iran’s Lavan oil refinery after ceasefire with the US sparks tensions, reports of explosions, and concerns over stability in the region.
A fragile truce has been thrown into question after a reported strike on an oil refinery on Lavan Island. According to Iran’s Press TV, the facility was hit in an attack attributed to US and Israeli forces, marking a violation of the recently announced ceasefire.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the site, where firefighters and security services are now working to contain the blaze and secure the area.
Earlier that morning, Iran’s Mehr news agency reported explosions on both Lavan and Sirri islands. The blasts, it said, occurred shortly after a ceasefire agreement had been signed.
The National Iranian Oil Company later confirmed that the refinery on Lavan had been targeted. No casualties have been reported so far. Footage circulating on social media appears to show the facility engulfed in flames.
The incident comes on the same day Washington and Tehran announced a two-week truce. Under the agreement, the United States stepped back from plans for large-scale airstrikes on Iranian infrastructure, while Iran pledged to temporarily open the Strait of Hormuz. Initial talks between the two sides are expected to take place in Pakistan on Friday, April 10.
