U. S. Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called for curbing President Donald Trump’s authority, arguing that further escalation with Iran must be avoided and the domestic situation stabilized. He outlined his position on social media platform X.

Schumer warned that a renewed conflict would leave the United States in an even more precarious position. In his view, Congress should adopt a War Powers Resolution to definitively end the war and prevent further military escalation.

He also stressed that the standoff with Tehran has already damaged the country’s standing, leaving it worse off than before the conflict began. At the same time, Schumer sharply criticized Trump, using harsh language to question his judgment in military matters.

The War Powers Resolution referenced by the senator was enacted on November 7, 1973, and carries the force of federal law. It requires the U.S. president to coordinate with Congress as much as possible before deploying American armed forces abroad. In March, however, the Senate rejected a proposal aimed at limiting Trump’s military powers, which supporters said could have helped prevent escalation with Iran.

Overnight on April 8, the U.S. president announced that an agreement had been reached with Iran on a two-week ceasefire. Shortly afterward, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi reported that the Strait of Hormuz had been reopened. The vital waterway accounts for roughly 20% of global shipments of oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas.
