American service members who survived an Iranian drone strike on a base in Kuwait have challenged the Pentagon’s official account of the incident, according to CBS. They say their unit was left far more exposed than U.S. defense officials have acknowledged.

The report describes the strike as the deadliest Iranian attack on American forces since the conflict began. Six service members were killed and more than 20 others were injured.

Those interviewed disputed remarks by Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, who had claimed the drone managed to slip through the base’s defenses. The soldiers insist the reality was different.

Speaking anonymously, one of them said the suggestion that someone narrowly escaped death was untrue, adding that the unit had not been prepared to defend itself and was not positioned in a fortified location.

The attack took place at the Kuwaiti port of Ash-Shuayba, a key hub used by U.S. forces to move equipment and personnel across the Middle East.
