President Donald Trump said in an interview with CNN that China would face serious consequences if it began supplying weapons to Iran.
At the same time, the US leader did not say whether he had discussed the issue with Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom he may meet in China early next month.
Trump also made clear that he was not particularly concerned about the outcome of talks with Iran in Pakistan, arguing that Washington had already secured a victory. He further stressed that NATO allies had provided no help to the United States.
The president added that Washington would ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open, even though the US itself does not rely on the route.
According to Trump, the waterway is critically important for many other countries, but they are either afraid to act, lack the necessary strength, or are unwilling to bear the costs involved.
CNN reported, citing US intelligence assessments, that China could begin supplying Iran with new air defense systems in the coming weeks.
