The White House is weighing three possible сценарии for how the situation around Iran could unfold, as Washington tightens its economic pressure in the region. This was reported by The Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, citing sources familiar with internal discussions.

One scenario under consideration involves a change of power in Iran. According to those close to U. S. President Donald Trump, such an outcome is seen as more likely if military strikes are halted rather than intensified.

Another option being discussed envisions a transition to a new Supreme Leader. Sources indicated that potential figures include parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

A third scenario centers on the possibility that hardline elements within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps could attempt to break through a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz or escalate pressure on the United States through other means, including potential attacks.

At the same time, Ignatius noted that Trump does not appear to be seeking further escalation of the conflict.

The discussions follow the collapse of U.S.-Iran talks in Islamabad, after which the American president ordered the introduction of a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Shortly afterward, U. S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced plans to block all maritime traffic linked to Iranian ports starting at 18:00 Moscow time on April 13.

In response, senior military adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mohsen Rezai, indicated that U.S. attempts to impose a naval blockade would not succeed.
