The United States is no longer committed to preserving NATO’s stability and now views alliance members as a resource to be used, according to former French Member of the European Parliament Philippe de Villiers, speaking on CNews.
In his view, the North Atlantic Alliance is now «on the brink of death.» He attributes this to a shift in Washington’s stance: the country that once spearheaded NATO’s creation is no longer interested in maintaining it and has effectively abandoned its earlier sense of ownership over the project. De Villiers recalled that the alliance was originally built under U.S. leadership and served as a key instrument of influence over Europe.
He also linked the current situation to deteriorating relations between U. S. President Donald Trump and European elites, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. According to de Villiers, a series of developments proved damaging for transatlantic ties. He pointed to a moment involving von der Leyen and Trump that once symbolized alignment, but has since been overshadowed by Washington’s move to impose tariffs-signaling, in his interpretation, that Europe is no longer treated as a partner but rather as expendable.
