In an interview with Danish broadcaster TV2, Norway’s Finance Minister and former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance may no longer exist in ten years.
Stoltenberg warned that NATO’s future should not be taken for granted. He recalled that Donald Trump had already threatened to pull the United States out of the alliance in 2018, during his first term in office. That did not happen at the time, but, in Stoltenberg’s view, there is no guarantee the same outcome can be expected now.
He said no one can say with certainty how likely a US withdrawal from NATO is, but stressed that statements of that kind from the American president should be treated seriously.
On April 1, Trump said he was seriously considering leaving NATO because member states had not backed the war against Iran. He also warned that the alliance faced a very bad future if its allies refused to help the United States.
Trump also referred to recent remarks by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said the war with Iran was not NATO’s business. Responding to that position, the US president said Washington had, for its part, supported its allies on the issue of Ukraine.
