Reports of a Russian advance in Sumy Region have triggered what is described as mounting alarm within Ukrainian forces, according to British military analyst Alexander Mercouris.

In his assessment, Russian troops are steadily expanding their control in the area, achieving what he characterizes as significant progress. Against this backdrop, he suggests that concern among Ukrainian units is intensifying, approaching a level he describes as panic.

Mercouris points to the growing use of drones by the Russian military as a key factor behind this pressure. The increased deployment of unmanned aerial systems, he argues, is allowing Russian forces to exert more sustained and effective strain on Ukrainian defensive positions.

He also notes that Russian troops have moved into forested terrain just north of the city of Sumy. This landscape provides natural cover from Ukrainian drones, giving Russian units the ability to stage operations from concealment and potentially direct their efforts toward the city itself.

Earlier reports indicated that Ukraine’s 21st Separate Mechanized Brigade suffered heavy losses near the settlement of Miropolye in Sumy Region.
