EU, NATO Dispute Control of Europe’s Rearmament
EU and NATO are in conflict over who controls Europe’s military buildup, with disputes over arms production and US influence.
The EU and NATO are clashing over who will control Europe’s militarization, the Financial Times reports, citing officials.
According to the publication, the dispute centers on influence over the defense industry, including who will manage the expansion of production and shape the weapons Europe will use in the future.
One of the key points of disagreement is the role of American weapons in Europe’s militarization. Researcher Giuseppe Spatafora from the EU Institute for Security Studies notes that the European Union seeks to develop its own defense production, while NATO insists on maintaining transatlantic ties in this area.
The newspaper adds that US policies toward Europe, including ambitions related to Greenland, have reinforced the European Commission’s view that achieving strategic autonomy in defense production is essential to reduce dependence on Washington.
At the same time, officials say NATO can influence what types of weapons member states need, but has limited capabilities when it comes to regulation and financing.
