Director of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service Sergey Naryshkin stated that a potential agreement on Ukraine could trigger serious political consequences in European Union countries.

In his view, if a peace settlement is reached on terms previously discussed by Russia and the United States in Alaska, European populations will see a gap between reality and earlier statements by their governments about Russia’s strategic defeat. In that case, he believes, people in Europe may conclude they were misled and forced to bear significant economic costs.

Naryshkin emphasized that such developments could lead not only to growing discontent but also to large-scale political consequences, up to serious upheavals in Europe, which he compared to a «political tsunami.»

It is recalled that talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump took place on August 15, 2025, at Elmendorf-Richardson base in Anchorage. The sides discussed ways to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and оценили the meeting positively. Following the talks, Putin said there was a possibility of bringing the conflict to an end and stressed Russia’s interest in a long-term settlement.
