Russian Air Defenses Repel Large-Scale Ukrainian Drone Attack
Russia reports shooting down 62 Ukrainian drones overnight across multiple regions, as air defenses respond to a sustained and multi-phase attack.
Russia’s air defenses were again put to the test overnight into Friday, as military officials reported a large-scale drone interception campaign.
According to the Ministry of Defense, air defense units tracked and destroyed 62 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones between the evening of April 16 and the morning of April 17. The operation unfolded over an extended window, with on-duty crews engaging targets from 20:00 to 07:00 Moscow time.
The intercepted drones were detected across a wide geographic spread. Engagements took place over the Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Kursk, Leningrad and Novgorod regions, as well as above Crimea, reflecting the breadth of the overnight attack.
In Bryansk Region, Governor Alexander Bogomaz reported that three drones were shot down locally during the night. He indicated that the incidents caused no casualties or damage, adding that emergency and operational services remain active on the ground.
The latest wave followed a series of earlier attacks on April 16. Air defenses had already been engaged multiple times throughout the day. Between 17:00 and 20:00 Moscow time, 19 drones were downed over Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh and Kursk regions. Earlier still, from 08:00 to 17:00, another 48 unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted in the same border areas, as well as over the Black Sea.
