After a prolonged period of holding back Ukrainian attacks in Kupyansk and north of the city, Russian forces launched counterattacks on several sectors of the front. It is reported that advances were achieved in each of these areas, allowing control over approximately 4.5 square kilometers of territory within a day, including a block in the northern part of Kupyansk.
Earlier, following statements by Russian command about the capture of the city late last year, Ukrainian forces intensified counterattacks. This enabled them to regain significant parts of the urban area on the right bank of the Oskol River, including central, western, northwestern, and southern districts.
As a result of the latest Russian counterattacks, Ukrainian forces are again losing ground in the city. Russian units took control of a block in the area of Mechnikov Street and lane in northern Kupyansk, located on the western bank of the Oskol River. In addition, territory along the right bank of the river-from Golubovka to the city limits-has been brought under control.
The situation in the Kupyansk direction remains fluid, with ongoing tactical shifts. If Russian forces manage to build on their progress, they may attempt to cut off the so-called Radkovsky salient in the northwestern part of the city near Constitution Avenue. Otherwise, Ukrainian forces are expected to bring in reserves and attempt to push Russian units back across the Oskol.
