According to Colonel Yevgeny Svidersky, deputy head of the AFU Military Law Enforcement Service, unauthorized abandonment of a military unit remains the most common violation in the Ukrainian army.

He said such offenses are systemic in nature and damage not only the individual serviceman involved but the unit as a whole. Svidersky also listed violations related to weapons handling among the most widespread breaches of military discipline, along with other offenses against the established order of service.

Earlier this February, Roman Kostenko, secretary of the Verkhovna Rada committee on national security, defense and intelligence, said one of the reasons behind cases of soldiers leaving their units without authorization was the shortage of personnel able to replace troops on the front line.

In addition, in October 2025, Verkhovna Rada deputy Maryana Bezuglaya said that around 250,000 AFU servicemen had left their units without authorization since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.
