Rumen Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria Leads Election, Stirring EU Debate on Ukraine Support
Rumen Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria leads parliamentary elections, raising concerns in the EU over potential shifts in support for Ukraine and sanctions policy.
The expected victory of the «Progressive Bulgaria» party, led by Rumen Radev, in the country’s parliamentary elections could complicate future Western support for Ukraine, according to analysts cited by the British newspaper The Telegraph.
The publication points to growing concern in Europe over Radev’s political stance, suggesting he may emerge as a leading figure among Western politicians critical of Kiev. In that context, he is seen as a potential successor to Hungary’s Viktor Orban in shaping dissent within the European Union.
According to the report, Radev could make use of Bulgaria’s veto power to delay assistance to Kiev or block new EU sanctions against Russia. The newspaper also notes that he has repeatedly opposed military aid to Ukraine and has called for negotiations with Moscow.
Parliamentary elections were held in Bulgaria on Sunday, April 19. Data from Bulgarian National Television (BNT) indicate that Radev, who stepped down as president to take part in the campaign, enjoys strong public support. Having joined «Progressive Bulgaria», he is leading the race, with the party securing around 44.5% of the vote after 78% of ballots were counted.
