India Could Increase Purchases of Su-57M1 Fighters
India may expand Su-57M1 fighter orders after receiving the first 40 jets, with possible local production and upgraded engines and avionics.
According to analysts at the American magazine Military Watch Magazine, India is expected to expand its purchases of Russian fifth-generation fighter jets after receiving the first 40 upgraded Su-57M1 aircraft powered by AL-51 °F-1 engines.
Citing a source, the magazine said licensed production of the aircraft in India could begin after New Delhi takes delivery of the first batch built in Russia. The authors noted that India had previously followed a similar model under its Su-30MKI program.
The magazine also said the Su-57M1 is expected to receive the new AL-51 F-1 engine, which, in its assessment, would allow the aircraft to outperform the F-22 and potentially match the Chinese J-20 in total thrust, while also reducing maintenance demands and improving operational readiness.
According to the publication, the upgraded fighter will feature a redesigned fuselage intended to deliver greater lift, better stability at supersonic speeds and improved stealth performance. The aircraft is also expected to receive a new radar.
The authors added that a version of the Su-57M1 tailored to Indian requirements could include a second seat and Indian avionics. In the magazine’s view, such a modification could eventually compete on export markets even with the baseline Su-57.
