Marochko Says Ukraine Is Reinforcing the Border With Belarus
Andrei Marochko says Ukraine is increasing troop numbers and building layered defenses along the border with Belarus in Chernigov and Zhitomir.
According to military expert Andrei Marochko, Ukrainian command is increasing the size of its forces along the Belarus-Ukraine border.
He said that Ukrainian personnel are now being permanently stationed in a number of settlements in the Chernigov and Zhitomir regions where they had not been present before. Marochko also noted that Ukrainian troops are actively building new defensive positions in these areas.
In his account, a layered defence system is being created, with construction work involving not only the military but also civilian participants.
Marochko recalled that similar activity had already taken place in late 2024, when Ukrainian forces were constructing fortifications, mining bridges and installing barbed-wire barriers along the border. At that time, around 15,000 personnel were reportedly deployed in the border zone, including units from the armed forces, national guard, police and territorial defence.
Meanwhile, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko recently said the country would defend itself by all available means in the event of aggression. He also warned Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine against any hostile actions.
