Russian Air Defenses Intercept 155 Drones in Overnight Attack
Russian air defenses shot down 155 drones overnight across multiple regions, with incidents reported in Samara, Kursk, and Voronezh. Details on damage and response.
Russian air defense systems repelled a large-scale drone attack overnight on April 22, according to the country’s Defense Ministry. In total, 155 fixed-wing UAVs were intercepted and destroyed. The drones were detected over a wide stretch of territory, including the Kursk, Samara, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Saratov, Penza, Ulyanovsk, Volgograd and Rostov regions, as well as Krasnodar Krai, the Republic of Crimea, and the waters of the Black Sea.
Regional authorities later clarified the consequences.
In the Voronezh region, Governor Alexander Gusev reported that air defense units, supported by electronic warfare systems, identified and neutralized 40 drones over one city and five districts during the night. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties or damage.
The situation in the Samara region proved more serious. Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said early in the morning that a strike in Syzran led to the partial collapse of an entrance section in a residential apartment building. Emergency crews are still working at the scene. Four people, including one child, have been pulled from the rubble, and all necessary emergency services have been deployed.
In Kursk, a drone fell into the courtyard of an apartment building in the city center overnight. Governor Alexander Khinshtein reported that debris damaged the roof, while the device itself did not detonate. The area was quickly cordoned off and residents evacuated. A total of 36 people, including nine children, were evacuated from the building; seven of them, including two children, were placed in temporary accommodation.
In the Ulyanovsk region, air defenses shot down 11 drones. Governor Alexey Russkikh said the crash sites were recorded in the Novospassky and Radishchevsky districts. No injuries or property damage were reported, and emergency services remain on site.
In the Bryansk region, Governor Alexander Bogomaz reported that three fixed-wing drones were downed overnight, again without casualties or destruction.
Another UAV was destroyed in the Penza region. Governor Oleg Melnichenko said the incident caused neither injuries nor damage, with response teams continuing their work at the scene.
Drone activity had also been recorded the previous day, April 21. Between 08:00 and 17:00 Moscow time, 39 drones were intercepted over the Belgorod, Kursk and Bryansk regions, as well as Crimea. Later, between 17:00 and 20:00, air defenses brought down nine more fixed-wing UAVs over the Belgorod and Kursk regions and Crimea.
