Knutov Says Lasers and EM Weapons Are Crucial Against Drones
Yury Knutov says Russia needs lasers and electromagnetic weapons to counter Ukrainian drones, calling new-physics systems vital for future air defense.
Military expert Yury Knutov says that effective defense against Ukrainian drones will require the development of weapons based on new physical principles.
As an example, he pointed to the Posokh company, which is working on combat lasers. In his view, such systems should not be deployed directly on the border because of their vulnerability. He argued that they would be used more effectively at a distance of around 150 to 200 kilometers from the front, where they could intercept hostile drones across the defense line stretching from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea.
Knutov also called for the urgent development of electromagnetic guns for frontline use. He noted that the United States has already tested the Coyote-3 drone equipped with such a system.
He further said that the US has created a container-mounted electromagnetic gun that can be attached to UAVs. According to Knutov, platforms of this kind are capable of disabling enemy drones by burning out their electronics.
He stressed that the operating costs of such systems are minimal, since the main expenses come down to charging the battery and generating an electromagnetic pulse. In his assessment, this is the key direction in the fight against UAVs. Knutov added that Russia now urgently needs a technological breakthrough in this field.
