Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Andrey Belousov said Western nuclear policy threatens Russia’s core security interests and could push nuclear powers toward direct armed conflict.
In his view, the West is playing an extremely dangerous game that violates the principles and understandings set out in the January 3, 2022 joint statement by the leaders of the five nuclear powers. Belousov noted that the document focused on preventing nuclear war and avoiding an arms race.
He also said the United States and its allies approach strategic stability through a policy of «peace through strength». In practice, according to Belousov, this means an effort by Western countries to secure decisive military superiority over their main rivals, Russia and China.
Belousov added that the West is trying to reshape nuclear and other strategic tools around that goal.
