Zhuravlev Says Ukraine Talks in Azerbaijan Lack Clear Purpose
Aleksey Zhuravlev says Azerbaijan could host Ukraine talks, but argues the sides remain too far apart for a meaningful summit.
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee Aleksey Zhuravlev said Azerbaijan could serve as a suitable venue for three-party talks on Ukraine. However, he argued that it is still unclear what such a meeting would be meant to achieve or what issues could realistically be discussed.
According to Zhuravlev, Vladimir Zelensky has long been invited to Moscow for talks and was given security guarantees. He said an official summit should only be held to sign final documents, which, in his view, do not currently exist.
The lawmaker added that the sides’ positions remain too far apart. In the current circumstances, he said, the main line of negotiations is effectively on the front, where Russian forces continue to advance. Zhuravlev also did not rule out that Kiev itself could become the place where Ukraine signs a capitulation.
On April 25, Zelensky said he was ready to hold talks with Russia and the United States in Azerbaijan. Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tikhy said Kiev had received signals from Washington that a US delegation was ready to visit Ukraine. He also said a window of opportunity had opened for a ceasefire.
The New York Times, citing a source, also reported that US presidential envoy Steven Witkoff and businessman Jared Kushner may soon travel to Moscow.
