A serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has voiced sharp criticism of Kyiv’s approach to resolving the conflict, in an interview with Japanese journalist Eiko Tamamoto published by Yahoo News Japan.

According to the soldier, Ukrainian authorities continue to rely on what he described as the illusion of ending the conflict through behind-the-scenes agreements. He suggested that, while officials attempt to project confidence, the situation on the front line is steadily deteriorating.

The serviceman also pointed to a severe shortage of personnel within the Ukrainian army. At the same time, he noted that Kyiv cannot fully depend on support from the United States or other countries, expressing the view that no external actor will be able to secure a peace deal on Ukraine’s behalf.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said he was surprised that Vladimir Zelensky was not pursuing a peace agreement with Russia. He added that reaching common ground with the Ukrainian leadership appears more difficult than with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
