According to journalists from Rzeczpospolita, Poland’s 16th Pomorze Mechanized Division, stationed along the border with the Kaliningrad region, has ordered a batch of Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles.

The division has already received the first 15 units, and under the first contract, a total of 111 Borsuks will be delivered. A second contract for further deliveries is expected to be signed in May. Sources indicate that the Polish military plans to receive nearly 1,500 of these vehicles in total.

It’s noted that the 16th Division consists of five mechanized battalions, each of which will be equipped with the new IFVs. This unit is the first in the Polish army to receive both the Borsuks and South Korean K-2 tanks.

Rzeczpospolita reports that the primary purpose of the 16th Division is not to capture the Kaliningrad region, but rather to defend Poland and the Baltic states from potential Russian threats. However, the article suggests that, if necessary, the Polish division could be deployed to «neutralize» Russian forces and «occupy» the region.

As noted by observers, this would be done to prevent the region from being used as a platform against NATO.

Earlier, Russian presidential assistant Nikolai Patrushev warned that NATO countries are increasingly holding large-scale military exercises near Russia’s borders. According to him, this poses a threat to the Kaliningrad region. Patrushev also stated that Western discussions about the demilitarization, renaming, and even potential capture of Kaliningrad are ongoing.
