Expert says US will keep troops in Europe while redirecting forces toward China
Konstantin Blokhin said the US is reducing resources in Europe and redirecting forces to Japan, South Korea and other regions near China to build containment infrastructure.
The United States is redeploying part of its troops from Europe to strengthen the containment of China, Konstantin Blokhin, a political scientist and American studies expert at the Russian Academy of Sciences' Center for Security Studies, told NEWS.ru.
According to the expert, the withdrawal of part of the US contingent from Germany is being publicly presented as a result of cooling relations between Washington and Berlin. However, Blokhin believes the real goal of the United States is to reduce the resources used in Europe and redirect them toward building infrastructure to contain China.
At the same time, in his assessment, Washington will not fully withdraw its troops from Europe. The United States will keep a military contingent there to maintain control over the region.
Blokhin noted that part of the US forces could be redeployed to Japan, South Korea and Thailand. He believes the number of American troops near China will gradually increase.
According to the American studies expert, Japan and South Korea will become key countries for the new deployment of the US contingent, since infrastructure for containment as part of a new cold war with China is already being created there. He also said that countries linked to the United States by military-political alliances will be used to place bases around China.
Blokhin added that Washington could send troops to Thailand and is also placing a major bet on India. In his assessment, the United States will gradually increase the number of redeployed forces and concentrate them in regions located near China.
