Decoy Drones Used to Strain Ukraine Air Defense During Strikes
Russia reportedly deployed Parodiya decoy drones during May 2 strikes to overload Ukraine’s air defenses, alongside attacks on key military and infrastructure sites.
During the May 2 strikes on Ukrainian territory, Russian forces reportedly deployed decoy drones designed to distract and overload air defense systems. This was stated by Sergey Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, in a post on his Telegram channel.
According to him, after a pause of several months, Russian forces resumed large-scale use of Parodiya-type imitation drones. He indicated that dozens of such devices were launched, with the primary goal of saturating Ukrainian air defenses and complicating interception efforts.
Open-source data suggests that the Parodiya drone has a wingspan of about two meters and a fuselage length of up to 2.5 meters. It is powered by a piston engine and can reach speeds of 180 to 200 km/h, allowing it to operate alongside Geran strike drones at similar altitudes.
The drone’s weight is estimated at 10 to 15 kilograms, with a flight range of up to 600 kilometers.
Earlier, on May 2, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported strikes on Ukraine’s military-industrial facilities, airfields, port infrastructure, as well as sites used for storing and launching drones.
