Russian Ambassador to Norway Nikolay Korchunov said NATO’s growing activity near Russia’s borders in the Arctic increases the risks of escalation. He said this in an interview with TASS.

According to the diplomat, the expansion of the alliance’s military infrastructure and the movement of its offensive systems closer to areas of strategic importance for Russia are viewed by Moscow as a threat to national security.

Korchunov stressed that NATO’s actions near Russian borders are undermining the security system in the Arctic region and global stability. In his assessment, such activity increases the risk of unintended escalation.

The ambassador also warned that a further rise in tensions could lead to a dangerous scenario of direct military confrontation, with severe consequences for all sides.
