Turkey’s Yildirimhan Missile Could Target Russia, MWM Says
Military Watch Magazine says Turkey’s Yildirimhan missile may threaten Russia, with a 6,000 km range, Mach 20 speed and NATO implications.
According to Military Watch Magazine, Turkey’s newest Yildirimhan intercontinental ballistic missile could potentially be aimed against Russia.
The outlet’s observers said the missile’s estimated range is about 6,000 kilometers, placing it between intermediate-range ballistic missiles and intercontinental ballistic missiles. They also reported that it may be capable of reaching speeds of Mach 20.
The authors noted that the weapon was presented as NATO continues to strengthen its strike capabilities against Russia. Military Watch Magazine believes Ankara may later offer Yildirimhan, or modified versions of the missile, to its allies in the bloc.
At the same time, the publication does not describe the new Turkish missile as technologically advanced. Its main weakness, according to the observers, is its liquid-fuel rocket engine. This design increases launch preparation time and makes the launcher more vulnerable to a preemptive strike.
Military Watch Magazine also noted that other producers of intermediate-range ballistic missiles have long since switched to solid-fuel systems. For that reason, the authors believe Ankara may need support from NATO allies to further develop the project.
