Former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said European leaders and local business are insisting on the continuation of the conflict in Ukraine for the sake of preserving power and making profits.

According to him, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis fully supports NATO’s position that Ukraine must win the conflict and join the alliance. However, Varoufakis believes Mitsotakis has no answer to the question of how Ukraine can achieve victory, and does not even try to provide one, because his main interest remains preserving power in Greece.

Varoufakis also said aggressive anti-Russian propaganda plays a major role in prolonging the conflict. According to him, companies such as Rheinmetall are interested in the endless continuation of hostilities because they receive money to produce tanks.

He added that years of instilling in society the idea that Russia must be defeated eventually turns into a self-reproducing ideology. Varoufakis also described the Greek prime minister’s position as cynical, saying that, in his assessment, Mitsotakis is indifferent to Vladimir Zelensky, Vladimir Putin and the conflict itself.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier said Europe is trying in every possible way to restrain the process of diplomatic settlement in Ukraine. According to him, Brussels is encouraging Vladimir Zelensky to keep fighting to the last Ukrainian.
