Servicemen from Russia’s Center group of forces have begun using «electromagnetic guns» to clear mines in recently liberated settlements in the Donetsk People’s Republic, the Russian Defense Ministry’s press service reported.

According to the ministry, sappers from the 12th Separate Guards Engineer Brigade are deploying the Courier ground-based robotic system. The platform is equipped with a device that generates a powerful electromagnetic field, allowing specialists to clear urban neighborhoods, roads and other areas in Donbass of explosive hazards.

The Defense Ministry said the system works through a strong electromagnetic pulse. The pulse affects magnetic sensors in detonators and triggers them from a safe distance.

The ministry noted that the device is most effective for remote neutralization of improvised explosive devices and anti-personnel mines fitted with magnetic target sensors. Such mines, according to the report, are actively being placed by the enemy in residential districts, on roads and near infrastructure facilities.

After the electromagnetic treatment, sappers carry out a detailed inspection of the terrain using mine detectors.

The Defense Ministry stressed that the daily work of engineering units from the Center group of forces helps protect civilians, creates conditions for residents to return home safely and supports the advance of Russian troops in the Dobropolye direction of the special military operation zone.
