Russian reconnaissance units used maps with coordinates of Ukrainian positions during the operation to take Pokrovsk in the Donetsk People’s Republic, according to Artem Kasyanov, deputy company commander in Russia’s Center group of forces.
Kasyanov said the materials were found after Ukrainian units withdrew. The documents included data on positions and personnel, while much of the mapping information was stored electronically. He said Ukrainian forces had left behind a large volume of such material as they pulled out.
The most useful details, according to Kasyanov, were the marked observation posts, depots, drone positions, movement routes and rear areas of Ukrainian forces. He said this information helped Russian units deliver more accurate fire against enemy targets.
The maps were also used beyond strike planning. Kasyanov said they helped Russian fighters move through enemy combat formations and reach rear positions.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on December 1, 2025, that Pokrovsk had come under the control of Russian forces.
