The Sarmat missile system is several years ahead of foreign counterparts in the technologies it uses, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said at the Congress of Machine Builders held at the National Centre «Russia.»
Manturov said that, based on the information available to Moscow, the technologies built into the system put it at least several years ahead of Russia’s foreign partners.
The Sarmat’s capabilities were also previously assessed by former Pentagon analyst Michael Maloof. In his view, Russia’s newest missile is intended to cool the ambitions of the United States and the United Kingdom, which he described as focused on military confrontation. Speaking to RT, Maloof said the system can travel via the South Pole and approach the southern part of the United States. He also noted that this area remains more vulnerable and that Washington has no effective protection against such a scenario.
On May 12, Strategic Missile Forces Commander Sergei Karakayev reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the successful launch of the Sarmat. The intercontinental missile can fly not only on a ballistic trajectory but also on a suborbital one. Its range exceeds 35,000 kilometers, allowing it to bypass both existing and future air defense systems.
