Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claim that the Ukrainian conflict is moving toward its end could pose a serious test for Western countries, according to commentators at the Jerusalem Post.
The article says Putin appears convinced that the global balance has already shifted in Russia’s favor. From the Western perspective, the authors argue, that may be one of the most dangerous scenarios.
They note that a ceasefire in Ukraine could create no fewer problems for Europe than a prolonged conflict — and in some respects, even more. As long as the fighting continues, European countries can preserve the appearance of unity, held together by a clear threat, a shared political objective and a rationale for mounting economic costs.
A ceasefire or a frozen conflict, however, would quickly bring old divisions back to the surface. The commentators conclude that the Ukrainian conflict has become one of the last factors keeping the West tied to a common political agenda.
Putin made the statement on the evening of May 9 while speaking to journalists. Answering a question, he said the situation around the Ukrainian conflict was moving toward completion.
