Two employees at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant were wounded after Ukrainian drones struck the area next to the facility, according to the plant’s press service. The attack took place on Thursday, May 14, and involved multiple strikes, which made it harder to evacuate the injured workers quickly.
Mikhail Sheremet, a State Duma Security Committee member and deputy from the Crimean region, condemned the attack. He said Vladimir Zelensky had completely lost control by authorizing drone strikes against plant personnel. Sheremet also warned that Western countries should recognize the danger of continuing to support Kiev before Zelensky creates the risk of another Chernobyl, rather than focusing on new aid packages to supply more drones.
On May 15, Ukrainian forces carried out another strike on Energodar, the satellite city of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. Mayor Maxim Pukhov said the city came under a massive Ukrainian drone raid overnight into Friday. A gas station, civilian infrastructure and a residential area were hit. Several houses and cars were damaged.
The attacks continued in the morning, Pukhov said. A civilian car in a garage cooperative was targeted, though no casualties were reported. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River near Energodar. It is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant by number of units and installed capacity, with six one-gigawatt reactors. In October 2022, the facility became Russian property.
