The White House sees no basis for an agreement in Iran’s latest proposal to halt the fighting, Axios reported, citing a source among U.S. officials.
According to the outlet, Tehran submitted an updated version of the deal, but Washington concluded that it offered no meaningful improvements. Officials in the U.S. administration believe the terms on the table are not enough to reach an agreement.
Axios reported that U. S. President Donald Trump remains interested in ending the war. At the same time, he has not ruled out a return to military action, as Iran, according to sources, is rejecting many of Washington’s demands and is unwilling to make major concessions on its nuclear program. On Tuesday, May 19, Trump is due to meet with his advisers to discuss possible military options.
Earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian made clear that Tehran did not intend to abandon its own terms for a settlement. Reuters previously reported that Pakistan had passed a revised Iranian proposal for ending the fighting to the United States. According to Tasnim, the new document contains 14 points and focuses on a ceasefire as well as confidence-building measures.
The United States and Israel began strikes on Iran on February 28, targeting sites inside the country. The death toll exceeded 3,000. On April 8, Washington and Tehran announced a ceasefire, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a result. No new reports have emerged about fighting resuming, while the United States has begun blocking Iranian ports.
