Russian regions came under another large-scale drone attack overnight, with air defenses intercepting and destroying 273 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles between 8:00 p.m. Moscow time on May 19 and 7:00 a.m. on May 20, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
The drones were brought down over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Volgograd, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Leningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Novgorod, Oryol, Rostov, Smolensk, Tver and Tula regions. Air defenses also repelled attacks over the Krasnodar and Stavropol territories, Crimea, Tatarstan, the Moscow region, and the waters of the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.
In the Nizhny Novgorod Region, 30 drones were shot down during the night and morning, Governor Gleb Nikitin said. Preliminary reports indicated no casualties. Falling debris, however, damaged two industrial sites in the Kstovo District and triggered fires there. Emergency headquarters were deployed at the scene, while firefighting and cleanup operations continued. Schools in the district were moved to remote learning. Nikitin also said the drone threat had not passed and that air defense units remained active.
Voronezh Region Governor Alexander Gusev reported that air defenses detected and destroyed 20 drones overnight above two cities and four districts. No one was injured, according to preliminary information. In one district, debris damaged a private house, including its wall, ceiling and utility lines.
Around two dozen drones were also destroyed in the Rostov Region. Governor Yury Slyusar said the air attack was repelled in the Millerovo, Sholokhovsky, Matveyevo-Kurgansky and Chertkovsky districts. No reports of casualties or damage on the ground had been received, though the information was still being checked.
In the Leningrad Region, air defenses shot down three drones in the morning, Governor Alexander Drozdenko said.
One drone was intercepted overnight over the Ryazan Region. Governor Pavel Malkov said there were no casualties, but debris damaged three private houses in the Kasimov District.
In the Bryansk Region, acting Governor Yegor Kovalchuk said an FPV drone struck the settlement of Suzemka in the Suzemka District. The drone hit a moving vehicle, injuring the driver of the Miratorg agro-industrial holding. The man was taken to hospital and received medical care. The truck was damaged.
The Russian Defense Ministry had earlier reported that another 126 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones were intercepted and destroyed over Russian regions between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Moscow time on May 19.
