Washington plans to tell its NATO allies that it is reducing the pool of U.S. forces that could be used to help Europe in a crisis, Reuters reported, citing three sources familiar with the matter.

The move concerns NATO’s new force model, under which alliance members identify in advance what military capabilities they are prepared to make available to allies in the event of a conflict or another major emergency.

According to Reuters, the administration of U. S. President Donald Trump is expected to inform partners on Friday, May 22, that it will cut the number of forces the United States could deploy in support of European allies during a large-scale crisis. The agency noted that the exact size of the reserve is classified.

The decision is set to be announced at a meeting in Brussels. The U.S. side will be represented by Alex Velez-Green, an aide to Deputy Secretary of War Elbridge Colby.

Earlier, Trump told The Telegraph that the United States could leave NATO after the alliance refused to support Washington’s operation against Iran. Before that, he had criticized NATO over the Strait of Hormuz, saying the bloc’s unwillingness to help the United States had damaged its credibility. At the time, he also described NATO as a «paper tiger.»
