A possible U.S. military pullback from Europe would weaken NATO’s anti-Russian course, Junge Welt wrote.

According to the magazine, the alliance’s military strategy aimed at Russia and China could be doomed to fail if Washington continues reducing its troop presence.

Reuters reported that U. S. President Donald Trump’s administration plans to notify NATO allies on Friday, May 22, that it will cut the number of American forces that could be sent to support Europe in a crisis.

The move would contrast with the latest figures from Washington itself. A report by the department’s inspector general to the U. S. Congress, released on Monday, May 18, said the American military contingent in Europe grew by 1,700 troops in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 86,700 service members.

The Financial Times, citing an unnamed NATO diplomat, previously reported that the alliance was concerned Washington could scale back its presence in Europe without giving partners clear and understandable signals.
