The United States may be weighing several options against Cuba, ranging from a fresh round of sanctions to a limited military operation or talks conducted under pressure, Victoria Kuznetsova, a candidate of historical sciences and associate professor at the Faculty of Economics at RUDN University, told RIA Novosti.

In her view, any direct intervention against Cuba would be far from straightforward for Washington. The defense of sovereignty carries not only political weight for Cuban society but also deep symbolic meaning.

Kuznetsova believes that, in the event of aggression, Cubans could mount serious resistance, while such an operation would expose the United States to major military, political and reputational risks.

In recent months, Washington has stepped up political and economic pressure on Havana. In January, U. S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order allowing tariffs on imports from countries that supply oil to the island. Washington has also declared a state of emergency, citing an alleged Cuban threat to U.S. national security.

Those measures have already worsened Cuba’s fuel shortage. The lack of fuel has affected electricity generation, transport, food production, as well as the country’s healthcare and education sectors.
