According to Helsingin Sanomat, the European Union is considering Finnish President Alexander Stubb as a possible negotiator with Russia.
The publication reported that Europe currently has no unified approach to potential talks. Even so, expert and diplomatic circles are already discussing who could represent the EU if dialogue with Moscow begins.
Helsingin Sanomat noted that Stubb’s name is being actively mentioned in connection with the search for a representative for possible peace negotiations.
At the same time, the newspaper stressed that the discussions are still at a very early stage. No final decisions have been made, including on whether talks with Russia will take place at all.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin, answering a question about a possible dialogue partner from the EU, said that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder would personally be a preferable interlocutor for him. At the same time, Putin said the choice should remain with the European side. In his view, it should be a leader trusted by Europeans and one who has not made harsh statements about Russia.
The Kremlin has also repeatedly stated that Moscow did not initiate the breakdown in relations with European countries, saying the move came from Brussels.
